Halloween: why it is better to avoid sweets that sting

Sour candy, with its particularly high sugar and acid content, threatens tooth enamel. Better be reasonable.

Scary treats? Among the many favorite candies of young children, spicy candies are a big hit, but beware, on this festive Halloween Monday. Among citric and tartaric acids, their composition is of concern.

“It shines, it’s good,” gloats into the BFMTV Ambra microphone, dipping her hand into the large packet of sour candies. As with many children, these candies are among the favorites of girls.

“I often buy (sour candy),” her mother admits. “Generally, I give it two or three in the afternoon. That’s it,” she says.

Gums and enamel in danger

However, it is already too much, according to some doctors. Dentists warn against the presence of certain components that offer this characteristic flavor that children love. Various acids are involved: citric, malic and tartaric.

“The consumption of these sour candies is without a doubt the worst for the teeth,” warns dental surgeon Catherine Mojaïski, for BFMTV.

“What destroys tooth enamel is acid, either directly when you eat acidic things like lemon, or sugar that becomes acidic due to the effect of bacteria,” he explains.

An opinion from the French Food Safety Agency, published in December 2001, also warns against possible “irritation of the gums” caused by the repeated consumption of sour candies. Better be careful.

“Frame” your consumption

Should we abandon it completely? Not necessarily, according to a dietitian. “The more you demonize and prohibit the product (…), the more the child will be attracted to this food,” estimates Déborah Ohanna.

“It is important to frame it well,” he remembers, however, to avoid any excess.

If some Internet users are filmed on social networks consuming these sweets by the dozen, these behaviors should be avoided. On the back of some packages the mention “consume in a reasonable way” is also indicated.

Also be careful to give it to him at the right time, some specialists also believe. In fact, these treats contain a particularly high glycemic index. Therefore, it is better to favor consumption at the end of meals.
