Two cases of tuberculosis were detected at the Jean Jaurès nursery school in Libourne (Gironde), our colleagues from France Bleu Gironde report this Wednesday, November 20.
The children, from the same siblings, were isolated and taken in. Screening of other students, teachers and contact cases is being organized, explains the Nouvelle Aquitaine Regional Health Agency.
In recent weeks, other cases of this disease have been discovered in France, in particular at the Pasteur campus of the faculty of Rouen or at an institute in Lyon. Our colleagues at Le Progrès also report cases of tuberculosis in a residence in Lons-le-Saunier (Jura) that led to the hospitalization of six people.
Between 4,000 and 5,000 cases per year
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that most frequently affects the lungs, but can affect other organs, explains the Ministry of Health. This disease is transmitted through the air, often through prolonged close contact in a confined environment. It can last several months and progress to the patient’s death if left untreated.
The symptoms of the disease are not specific, although it is usually characterized by prolonged cough, fever, weight loss or night sweats. Every year between 4,000 and 5,000 cases of tuberculosis are reported in France, according to Public Health France.
In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded 8.2 million new cases of tuberculosis worldwide, a record.
