A lower risk of diabetes, cancers, bone fractures: the benefits and risks of vegetarian diets

The experiences published Thursday by Anses underline the effects of a food for vegetarian health. If this regime allows to reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, it can increase that of developing bone fractures or certain malformations.

Positive effects, but not only. ANSES (National Agency for Environmental, Environmental and Labor Health Security) publishes two experience in vegetarian diets on Thursday, March 13. One in the effects of these health regimes, the second at the food reference points for vegetarians.

The first highlights a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, as well as a lower risk of developing certain pathologies, such as ischemic heart disease, ovulatory disorders, as well as certain ophthalmological and gastrointestinal diseases compared to a diet that includes animal meat. The risk of developing cancers (prostate, stomach, hematological, all places) is also less in people who follow a vegetarian diet.

However, this study also made it possible to observe a higher risk to the health of osterapical health and hypospadia (congenital malformation) in people with a vegetarian diet.

Risks of deficiency in fatty acids, vitamins and zinc

Studies also show the nutritional status of iron, iodine, vitamins B12 and D, and a less favorable phosphocalcal balance than for non -vegetarians.

In the second experience, Anses has developed food reference points to allow vegetarians to cover their nutritional needs better while remaining close to their consumption practices.

“This work shows the difficulty of covering the nutritional needs in certain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA) and vitamin D for vegetarians in general, to which it is added, for vegans, the difficulty in covering nutritional needs in vitamin B12 and zinc in men,” the ANSIS sub-lifters.
