Australia, Japan, Mexico … These countries where smoking is already largely prohibited in public places

The Minister of Health, Catherine Vautrin, announced on Thursday, May 29 that smoking cigarettes will be prohibited in the beaches, in public parks and gardens and near the schools as of July 1. A measure to reduce tobacco consumption in public space.

A measure already implemented abroad. The Minister of Health, Catherine Vautrin, announced on Thursday, May 29, that “already on July 1, beaches, parks and public gardens, school promotions, bus refuge, sports facilities will be, everywhere in France, tobacco-free spaces”, a measure claimed by Anti-Tabac associations.

In other countries, smoking cigarettes is already largely limited in public space.

• Australia at the forefront of the fight against tobacco

In Australia, smoking is strictly prohibited in closed public places, including restaurants or pubs, as well as on monitored beaches, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalls.

Many other areas are also concerned, such as public transport stops, less than 5 meters from tickets to non -residential buildings or on the pedestrian streets.

The car is also prohibited by the car in the presence of a child under 16, or even under 18 in the states of Victoria and Tasmania.

Australia can boast of being one of the maximum countries in the fight against tobacco. The country of Oceania was, therefore, the first in the world in 2012 in imposing the packets of trivialized cigarettes.

The prices of cigarette packages are also destined to be dissuasive, with 29 euros per pack of 25 cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes are only on sale in pharmacies. This policy shows positive effects, since smoking has clearly fallen to the country in recent decades, 24% of smokers among those over 14 in 1991, 8.3% in 2023, according to a public investigation.

• In Japan, dedicated areas

In Japan, the smoking prohibition is in force in many public places, such as restaurants, offices and public transport. At the local level, some cities also prohibit smoking in public places.

In addition, the sale and purchase of tobacco are reserved for adults of 20 years or more. Therefore, the law is very restrictive, but at the same time, many public places have established closed rooms where cigarettes are authorized.

While Osaka is currently organizing the universal exhibition, which takes place from April to October, a new prohibition has entered into force, that of smoking classic and electronic cigarettes throughout the city, even in the streets or parks.

Aim? “Improvement of cleaning and image of an international tourist destination” of the city, the municipality announced in a press release, according to CNN. The same Antitabac measures had already been established in Tokyo for the Olympic Games in 2021 and since then they have remained in force.

• In Mexico, a very restrictive policy

In Mexico, the law is also one of the most restrictive in the world. Since 2023, cigarettes have been prohibited in public places. Specifically, it is no longer possible to smoke only in private homes.

Already in 2008, Mexico had established tobacco free spaces in restaurants and bars. More than ten years later, these types of establishments, but also hotels, beaches and parks are completely prohibited in cigarettes. Tobacco advertising is also prohibited and prohibited electronic cigarettes for sale and purchase.

However, smoking areas can be established in these public places, such as airports or hotels.

• In Sweden, an increasingly extensive prohibition

Closer to France, several European countries have also put into force the most restrictive legislation on tobacco consumption.

In Sweden, in particular, where less than 5% of the adult population smokes, tobacco consumption is prohibited in places of service, bars and restaurants in 2005. The prohibition extends in 2019 to the seats in outdoor areas, such as the terraces of the coffees.

In the United Kingdom, tobacco has become illegal since 2007 in pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and most workplaces and work vehicles. The law does not apply to electronic cigarettes.
