A serious illness. Six cases of botulism will be deplored in the Cholet region (the Loire Pay) as the regional health agency is announced in a press release, this Wednesday, July 16. Botulism is a serious neurological condition caused by the presence of a bacterium, especially in poorly preserved foods.
The Ars “was informed of several cases of botulism in the Cholet sector. At this stage, six people presented serious symptoms between July 7 and 14 that required their hospitalization,” said the health authority in a press release consulted by BFMTV.
The first elements of the health survey allowed to determine that the consumption of carrots “puts in hand” could be the cause of these pollution. The research continues to discover how many people in the family and the friendly sphere have also consumed these foods.
“None of these foods has been marketed,” said the Ars.
Serious or even fatal cases
The disease develops after the ingestion of toxins present in foods infected with bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. These can be developed in foods such as misleading jars and preserves.
The disease is “potentially serious”, mortal in 5 to 10% of cases according to the World Health Organization. It is manifested by several symptoms, including digestive signs (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting), drought from the mouth accompanied by trace, eye damage (lack of accommodation, blurred vision) and neurological symptoms (more or less strong paralysis of the muscles).
Another grouped case of botulismo broke out a few months ago in September 2024. A pesto with garlic of the bears consumed in Indre-Et-Loire had proven to be poorly treated, five people were hospitalized in serious condition. On May 23, Professor Pierre-François Dequin, a doctor-resident of the CRHU de Tours, explained that one of these people had been able to get out of resuscitation after eight months of hospitalization. Proof of the severity of the disease: the other patients remained in resuscitation, eight months later.
The authorities present some tips to avoid these pollution. “At the opening of a canned product or bottle, if there is a doubt, in particular an abnormal smell or color, if you cannot emit noise in the opening, if the canned box is fans, it is advisable to launch the product and not consume it.”
