Covid-19 in China: Brigitte Autran, president of Covars, believes that Beijing has “opened Pandora’s box”

The immunologist confirmed that between 70 and 75% of the population of Shanghai and Beijing had been infected with Covid-19 since the lifting of the “Covid zero” strategy in China.

The president of the Committee for the Monitoring and Anticipation of Health Risks (Covars), a former Scientific Council, reacted this Tuesday night on BFMTV to the explosion of positive cases of Covid-19 in China since the lifting of strict sanitary restrictions.

“It is a disaster, an epidemic of a terrible magnitude,” lamented Brigitte Autran.

At the start of the coronavirus epidemic, China had implemented a “zero Covid” strategy, which it almost completely abandoned in early December. With this, “China has opened Pandora’s box”, according to the immunologist, and has shown that its strategy “does not work”.

Has the peak already been reached?

While scientists, such as the virologist Christian Bréchot, speak of “200 to 300 million infections in a few weeks”, Brigitte Autran confirmed that 70% of the population of Shanghai and 75% of that of Beijing had already contracted the virus since beginning of December. .

This impressive proportion usually reassures the president of Covars. “The epidemic is moving so fast that it will soon resolve itself,” he said on our antenna. Especially since “the subvariants that circulate in China are the same as here.”

In addition, France and other countries around the world have decided to introduce a screening test for all travelers from China to better understand the mutations of the virus. “The objective is not to prevent the virus from entering the territory, it is an illusion,” he clarified.
