The space is tighter than in a traditional office, but that is normal: the medical consultation is carried out in a “medicobus”, an equipped motorhome that travels through the towns in the east of the Orne department.
The objective of this atypical vehicle? Fill the lack of GPs in the region. The inhabitants who consulted there are satisfied. “There really are towns where there are no doctors, so it’s very positive,” says Micheline, interviewed by BFMTV.
“It’s a little tighter, but otherwise it’s equivalent: the doctor is doing a good job,” confirms André, who also came to be examined.
Once contacted by people in need, the medical bus parks in front of a health center or a town hall in a city in need of doctors. The vehicle can then receive patients.
15.3 million French affected by the lack of general practitioners
Jean-Michel Gal, president of the Médicobus association and family doctor, explains that one part of the bus is dedicated to reception and the other, equipped with instruments, to examining.
The area served by the bus has 89,000 inhabitants. 9,000 of them did not have a doctor in October 2020, when this bus was converted into a doctor’s office. According to Jean-Michel Gal, this figure would be three times lower thanks to this mobile piece of furniture.
According to the UFC-Que Choisir association, access to a general practitioner would be difficult for 15.3 million French people.
