Allergies: more than two thirds of France on red alert for grass pollen

A total of 70 departments are now classified in red for the risk of allergy to pollen, synonymous with “high expected health impact”.

An allergenic tidal wave. In its latest update of its pollen map in France, the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA) warns of the prevalence and high circulation of grass pollen in the territory.

Currently, 70 metropolitan departments are classified in red, that is, with a high risk of allergy, with an expansion that continues towards the north of the country. The remaining 26 departments are placed in yellow, that is, a “predicted average health impact”.

Certain regions of the territory remain more or less safe: Brittany, Normandy, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, as well as two departments of the Great East. The rest of the departments, including Corsica, are affected by this proliferation of grass pollen.

Small precision on Loire-Atlantique: the department is also on yellow alert for sorrel pollen.

More and more allergies

Grass pollens are favored by “warm, sunny and windy” days that favor their movement. With a favorable wind, they can travel tens of kilometers from the pollination site.

The RNSA points out that grasses “are the herbaceous plants that we see growing along the roads, in the fields and sometimes even in roundabouts.”

With the blooming earlier and earlier, seasonal allergies worsen. In 2023, an estimated 30% of the population suffers from allergies, and this could rise to 50% in 2050.
