Former PSD Member of Parliament does not agree with an intelligence services committee of inquiry

Former PSD parliament leader Paulo Mota Pinto opposes the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the Security Information Service System (SIS) and opposes the model of direct parliamentary oversight, which he considers “disproportionate”.

“I don’t see it with good eyes. The work of this commission of inquiry could have very negative effects on a fundamental structure for the state. For the same reason that I oppose the model of direct parliamentary oversight, I believe that this would be disproportionate. The facts do not justify that”says Paulo Mota Pinto in an interview with the newspaper Público and Rádio Renascença.

The question of establishing a commission of inquiry into the functioning of the SIS arises after the controversy surrounding the resignation of Frederico Pinheiro, former assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba. It involves using SIS to recover the computer that the former adviser to the ministry had taken, allegedly containing classified information.

The statements by the former PSD parliament leader come a day after the PSD declared it would vote in favor of Chega and IL’s proposals to set up a committee of inquiry into the actions of the ‘secretaries’ in the Galamba case, but announced that “will not and has not taken any initiative in this regard.

In the interview, Paulo Mota Pinto, who together with Rui Rio was leader of the PSD faction and chairman of the Intelligence Services Oversight Commission, also says the “withdrawal of confidence” of the Secretary General of the Information System of the Portuguese Republic ( SIRP), Maria da Graça Mira Gomes.

“I did not understand exactly what that means: the withdrawal of political trust. There need not be a relationship of political trust between any of the party leaders and the Secretary General of the SIRP. The facts are not clear to me.” in the sense of justifying this withdrawal of political confidence. I have doubts about the reasons for this withdrawal. I don’t even understand the scope of it”he underlined.

When asked whether the SIRP acted properly, Paulo Mota Pinto says that “the facts are not very clear”.

“I still do not fully understand who took the initiative. But the SIRP oversight committee has issued a statement. I have no reason to believe that it did not properly perform its duties and did not investigate this. escape classified information , it is normal that the intelligence services try to prevent this. There does not seem to have been any exercise of police duties.”refers.

The former parliament leader adds that he has no reason to distrust the opinion of the inspection committee, that the process went completely smoothly.

Regarding the current position of the PSD in the polls, Paulo Mota Pinto emphasizes that the party has maintained its voting intentions or has risen slightly.

“I agree with what Professor Cavaco Silva said that the PSD can go up 7.8 points”indicated.

Paulo Mota Pinto asked the party to join, suggesting that it should expand beyond its device and attract civil society people.

Regarding euthanasia and when asked if he would like to help the PSD draw up the request for consecutive inspection of the diploma, Paulo Mota Pinto recalls that he voted against.

“I voted against the euthanasia diploma, but not for reasons of constitutionality. I voted against because I understood that it should have come first, in a first phase, only for cases where the prognosis was fatal and the suffering unbearable.” feeling”he said.
