The deputy minister of parliamentary affairs on Tuesday believed that those who tried to shake government confidence through business and the “foam of days” failed, countering that the socialist executive did not deviate from programmatic goals .
Ana Catarina Mendes spoke at the closing session of the Parliamentary Days of the PS in Funchal in a speech in which she also called for a ruthless fight against racism and xenophobia and put an end to the reform of the professional order law as a priority to traineeships of young people without entitlement to any compensation.
On a strictly political level, the Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs stressed to the Socialist deputies that “those who bet on the scum of the day, those who thought that by one case or the other they undermined the government’s credibility and shifted its focus of the government failed”.
“We are not deviating and continue to fulfill the commitments we made with the Portuguese, which gave us the confidence to run the country with an absolute majority,” he insisted.
In her speech, the minister alluded to attempts to discredit the parliamentary debate and stressed the “majority faction in the Assembly of the Republic for guaranteeing respect for institutions and for the diversity of opinions”.
“Even realizing that we are an absolute majority, the government is not dismissed from sitting in parliament to pass bills and parliament is not dismissed from overseeing the actions of the government. Government and 132 members of government present in parliamentary committees, alongside dozens of approved bills and resolutions [pelo PS] and that came from other parties,” he insisted.
According to the State Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs, these data reflect the socialist government’s view of democracy.
“It is our view of responsibility within a framework of absolute majority that the Portuguese relied on a year and a half ago,” he said.
In her speech, Ana Catarina Mendes mentioned that for years “it was said that there were no alternatives to austerity policies”, that post-financial crisis socialist governments had to respond to the covid-19 pandemic and the consequences of the war. in Ukraine, exacerbating inflation.
“They said again that the devil is coming, but we responded to people with pay rises and pensions, with more support for businesses and families. Stability and predictability was what the Portuguese asked of us. And it is only possible to give stability and predictability if we are able to respond rigorously and responsibly to the demands of the moment,” he added.
