Montenegro: “We will never violate social-democratic principles”

If there is a PSD government, there will be without “racist, xenophobic and immature politicians and policies” that run counter to “social-democratic principles”. The guarantee comes from Luís Montenegro, president of the party, in statements to the Spanish newspaper El País, who was in a report with the “orange” leader between Seixal and Costa da Caparica. Are the statements that Montenegro sees in André Ventura embodying the values you mentioned? “We define principles and not people,” he replies, guaranteeing: “We will never violate our social-democratic principles.”

However, in statements to the Spanish newspaper, the chairman of the largest opposition party refuses to say whether or not he will conclude a national agreement such as that in force in the Azores, where the social democrats rule with Chega’s support. “There is a lot of curiosity” to the right, Luís Montenegro supposes, “but not to the left”. So much so that it is necessary for the leader of the PSD to clarify whether, “in Spain as in Portugal”, the “socialists are ready to respect the will of the people or whether they are going to make a construction, as they have in both countries already did,” he said, recalling the agreements the PS (in Portugal) and the PSOE (in Spain) have made with more left-wing parties. Something he guarantees right won’t happen, at least along the same lines:I couldn’t do what Antonio Costa didz [ao fazer um acordo pós-eleições com o PCP e o Bloco de Esquerda, podendo assim ser governo]. It was a misrepresentation of the will of the people. This is a personal matter for me, I will only govern after winning the elections. The PSD may have a different idea, but it won’t be with me.”

Following this logic, Luís Montenegro therefore joins the PCP and Bloco de Esquerda, former allies of the PS, joins Chega: “They are all radicals and populists, left and right. They all cause problems left and right. The PCP and the bloc do not identify with NATO and sometimes even with the European Union. The PCP is a party that finds it difficult even to condemn the invasion of Ukraine.”

In the text published on Wednesday, the the country recalls that both in Portugal and in Spain the PSD and PP, respectively, are fighting for a change in the political cycle. And both here and there neither side will be able to rule alone. This if one takes into account the figures released in the latest polls, which point to a growth of the far right – and little or no recovery is expected for the anti-PS social democrats, who do not seem to have benefited from the successive government crises of the majority of absolute socialists.

Despite the various cases in the government, Montenegro thinks PS “has everything to last four years”. However, he criticizes “the fact that they talk so much about early elections says a lot about their incompetence”. To the the countrythe PSD chairman nevertheless expressed confidence in a recovery closer to the elections, “as happened in Spain”, which will go to the polls on July 23.
