PS says it will confirm diploma in AR, after Marcelo’s veto

“We respect the political disagreement of the President of the Republic, but substantially affirm the urgency to respond to the housing crisis and therefore we will confirm the diploma in the General Assembly of the Republic in accordance with the Constitution”. This is how the PS responds, through Eurico Brilhante Dias, to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s veto over the Mais Habitação program diploma.

The leader of the PS parliamentarian thus confirmed what the head of state considered “proof”: the socialist bank, which has an absolute majority of deputies, will confirm the diploma on housing, after the veto of Marcelo Rebelo against Sousa.

“The structural housing policies of the PS governments started in 2016, with the new generation of housing policies, with the Basic Housing Law and what we are looking for, and what we have done is a profound paradigm shift after decades without housing policies in Portugal Brilhante Dias said.

According to the PS, the program “put housing at the center of political priorities, in line with one of the greatest concerns the Portuguese have had in their lives”.

For Brilhante Dias, “More Housing was born as an immediate and conjunctural response to a problem that has structural roots”.

“There is no magic bullet that will solve this problem overnight,” he mused. the parliamentary leader of the PS, adding that the solutions of the Mais Habitação program “have been tested and presented in other countries of the European Union”.

He recalled that 185 thousand families have already received income support under Mais Habitação, also mentioning new programs such as Porta 65+.

He stated that “Mais Habitação focuses on local accommodation and forced rentalit was never the line of the PS”.

Earlier, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated in the message accompanying the veto of the parliamentary diploma: “I know, and we all know, that in a few weeks the absolute parliamentary majority can repeat the approval just voted. But, as will clearly be this is not what can or should prevent the expression of deep negative conviction and serene analytical judgment”.

The decree bringing together the main amendments to the housing law was passed by parliament on July 19 with only a positive vote from the PS and criticism from the opposition to the legislative package that introduced changes to leasing, licensing or local accommodation. .
