The President of the Government of Madeira (PSD/CDS), Miguel Albuquerque, on Tuesday supported the head of state’s veto over the Mais Habitação program, which he deemed “disastrous” and “absurd”, created by a “statistical policy”.
“It did very well because it is a program that is disastrous”said the leader of Madeira to journalists, on the sidelines of his visit to the works to consolidate the Cruzinha embankment, in the parish of Faia, in the municipality of Santana, which represented an investment of more than 3.5 million euros.
Miguel Albuquerque pointed out that, with this veto, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “sends an important signal to major sectors of Portuguese society”.
According to the leader of the regional executive, this program will “introducing restrictions on the housing market, trying to solve the housing problem in a completely stupid way”.
Madeira’s Social Democratic ruler argued that the program will “limiting rent, taxing local accommodation, creating a series of obstacles, in the sense of reducing the supply of private housing and causing clandestine housing to multiply again in Portugal”.
“If the truth is that housing in Portugal for the young and the middle class requires state intervention, it must be done without destroying the market, embarrassing owners or threatening homeowners”he added.
The island official defended that the policy of the State should be aimed at supplementing the supply market, with support and financing.
