“What a shame!” Since this Monday, the inhabitants of Mayotte only have access to running water one day in three, after the authorities have announced cuts for 48 hours every 24 hours. Hit by a severe drought, the department lacks water and its 300,000 inhabitants have been facing cuts for months.
“A certain number of emergency works are being carried out, financed and committed, in order to improve resources between now and the end of the year”, announced Gilles Cantal, responsible for “water” to the prefect of Mayotte since June. during a press conference on Monday. “We have to wait until November,” he urged.
A government “incapable of anticipating”
The management of the crisis was harshly criticized by the opposition from all sides, from the National Rally to the rebellious France. On X (formerly Twitter), Marine Le Pen considers herself “unworthy to continue leaving Mayotte”. “As in all spheres, the government has failed to anticipate, plunging the Mahorai into the greatest precariousness. It is urgent to react!” adds the former president of the RN.
While Jean-Luc Mélenchon asks him for “help”, “help”, the rebel deputy of Essonne Antoine Léaument he wonders “what has the government done”. “Nothing,” replies the chosen one.
On the right, the leader of the Les Républicains party, Éric Ciotti, denounces an “abandonment” of the overseas territories, a “pity when the island is already under tension”.
The island’s infrastructure, capable of producing a maximum of 38,000 m³ of water, can no longer meet the needs of its population, of around 40,000 m³ per day. The two reservoirs in the hills on which the inhabitants depend for their drinking water supply are almost empty and the next rainy season is not expected until the end of the year.
