Albuquerque flips the speech in Chega’s face

The president of the regional government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, on Monday ruled out any possibility of an agreement with Chega for the elections in the archipelago, as the party led by André Ventura is “in favor of centralism and the extinction of autonomy”. . Two days earlier, in statements to Novo Semanário, the leader of Madeira’s executive had opened the doors to an agreement with the party, assuming that “concluding an agreement” with Chega “will depend on the outcome” of the regional elections , and not of the results of the regional elections. at least because “there are no early wins”.

“We have no possibility of an agreement” with Chega, Albuquerque told reporters, noting that he does not intend to “make agreements with crocodiles in the hope of being eaten last.” However, the head of the executive in Madeira said that Chega, like the Left Bloc and the Communist Party, which he classified as “anti-system parties”, has a right to exist because it has been ratified by the Constitutional Court. “This idea that there are radicals on the left who need to be nurtured and radicals on the right who need to be purged with me doesn’t work,” he said, adding that there will be no agreements with Chega even if the coalition in charge The regional government, made up of the PSD/CDS, has failed to secure an absolute majority in the elections due to take place on 24 September.

In response to Albuquerque’s stance, Chega leader in Madeira, Miguel Castro, rejected the idea that the party is defending the autonomous region’s autonomy. In Miguel Castro’s perspective, Albuquerque is “a flop who lives only for photography and statistics”. Despite rejecting the idea that Chega does not want the region’s autonomy, Castro criticized Albuquerque for not resorting to the “only autonomous weapon that can be used against the Republic,” which is the “tax differential for the region,” which would VAT would be made possible. reduction from 22 to 16%.

Miguel Albuquerque’s statements took place on the same day that the Court of Justice of the Comarca of Madeira upheld Chega’s candidacy for the regional elections, against the complaint of the National Democratic Alternative (ADN) party, which sought to prevent the party’s participation of André Ventura in the race to lead the government of the archipelago. Meanwhile, the DNA has already confirmed that it will appeal the decision to the Constitutional Court. In the complaint, ADN asked that Chega’s candidacy should not be admitted, given the ruling of the Constitutional Court No. 520/2023, which invalidated that party’s V National Convention, in which the direction in which the list of candidates was approved was chosen for the elections of the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira. Without “any procedural irregularity preventing the enforcement of the decision to admit the Chega Party’s candidacy, the complaint filed by the DNA is dismissed,” the dispatch concludes.

André Ventura believed that “democratic common sense prevailed” in the judgment of the Court of Justice of Madeira.
