The president of the High Council of Public Works, Carlos Mineiro Aires, will chair the monitoring committee of the independent technical commission that will study the solutions for the new airport.
“The chairman of the Supreme Council of Public Works is the chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the Independent Technical Commission,” confirmed Pedro Nuno Santos, referring to Carlos Mineiro Aires, former president of the Order of Engineers, after the company advanced the information on Sunday. .
The minister says this decision is reflected in the Council of Ministers resolution adopted last week, adding that the full composition of the monitoring committee will be announced when the decision is published.
Asked about a preconceived idea from Carlos Mineiro Aires about a preference for Alcochete’s location for the airport in the Lisbon region, the minister replied: “The only way for us was not to have Portuguese engineers participate in the study”.
“In a country that has studied 17 locations in 50 years, it’s natural for people to have made up their minds over decades”maintained Mineiro.
And when asked whether the opinion of the chairman of the Supreme Council of Public Works could influence a decision, Pedro Nuno Santos stated that “it cannot and will not clearly influence”, but he added that “people clearly don’t ignore history, nor the studies of the past”.
“By the way, they will be part of the evaluation that will be carried out. We will have an independent technical committee to do its job. We have to wait quietly, we government, civil society organizations have to participate, what we need are different opinions and from your confrontation, but it will be the best solution”emphasized the governor.
The Technical Commission that will carry out the strategic environmental assessment for the new Lisbon airport will study five solutions and may propose even more if it deems it necessary.
