The Constitutional Court (TC) rejected the two appeals filed to derail Chega’s candidacy in Madeira’s regional elections, upholding the 13 competing lists initially validated, a judicial source said.
According to the President of the Comarca of Madeira, Filipe Câmara, the TC “did not hear the appeal of Gregório Teixeira”, a former member of Chega, and “considered that the ADN was unfounded”.
“Therefore, the 13 candidates competing for the elections validated by the Judicial Court of the Comarca of Madeira remain,” Filipe Câmara told the Lusa agency.
Last Wednesday, the Court of Justice of the Comarca of Madeira referred to the TC two appeals challenging the admission of Chega’s candidacy for the regional parliamentary elections of September 24, filed by the ADN and by Gregório Teixeira.
The appeals, said the then president of the Comarca of Madeira, were filed following an order that rejected the complaints of the National Democratic Alternative (ADN) party and of Chega militant Gregório Teixeira, thus validating the candidacy.
The two plaintiffs alleged that Chega’s candidacy, led by Miguel Castro, was not admitted given the Constitutional Court’s ruling No. 520/2023, which invalidated that party’s V National Convention.
At the convention, the direction that approved the list of candidates for the elections of the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira was chosen.
For the vote on September 24, the Court of Madeira has approved 13 candidatures, corresponding to two coalitions and 11 other parties, whose final lists will be posted this Monday, according to the election map.
Drawing the order of the thirteen political forces on the ballot, the Portuguese Workers’ Party (PTP) comes first, followed by Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), Bloco de Esquerda (BE), Partido Socialista (PS), Chega ( CH), React Include Integrate (RIR), Earth Party (MPT), National Democratic Alternative (ADN), Somos Madeira (PSD/CDS-PP coalition), People-Animals-Nature (PAN), Livre (L), CDU – Coalition Unitary Democratic Party (PCP/PEV) and Liberal Initiative (IL).
The previous regional elections took place on 22 September 2019.
In these elections, a coalition and 16 other parties competed in one constituency for the 47 seats in the Madeiran Parliament: PSD, PS, CDS-PP, JPP, BE, Chega, IL, PAN, PDR, PTP, PNR, Aliança, Partido da Terra – MPT, PCTP/MRPP, PURP, RIR and CDU (PCP/PEV).
The PSD then lost its first absolute majority in the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira, which it had held since 1976. She elected 21 deputies and formed a coalition government with the CDS-PP (three deputies).
The PS elected 19 deputies, the JPP three and the PCP one.
