Last Friday, the parliament congratulated Ukraine on the 32nd anniversary of its independence “as a free and sovereign state,” recalling “the deep ties of friendship that unite the Portuguese and Ukrainian people,” with the PCP abstaining.
After voting on the initiative, the Speaker of Parliament welcomed the presence of the Ukrainian Ambassador to Portugal, Maryna Mykhailenko, in the galleries of the Sala das Sessões, whereupon deputies of all parties stood up to clap, except the PCP benches. and BE, whose alternates remained seated.
The text, written by Parliament Speaker Augusto Santos Silva, recalls that Ukraine celebrated 32 years “as a sovereign and independent state” on August 24.
“The proclamation of Ukraine’s independence marked a historic milestone of undeniable importance for the Ukrainian people, but also for Europe and the world, as it established a new sovereign, free and independent nation on its own territory with internationally recognized borders.” .
Ukraine, the text continues, “celebrated the anniversary of its independence amid a struggle for its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity, defending itself against military aggression by the Russian Federation.”
“In doing so, Ukraine is defending all of us – all of us who defend the values of freedom and democracy and want a rules-based international order and a peace based on the Charter of the United Nations,” the text reads.
Recalling “the deep ties of friendship that unite the Portuguese people and the Ukrainian people, and in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in their struggle for the inalienable right to defend their independence and territorial integrity”, the Assembly of the Republic welcomed the country “for the 32nd anniversary of its independence as a free and sovereign state”.
