Asked about the migration crisis in Lampedusa, on the sidelines of his trip to Semur-en-Auxois (Côte-d’Or), Emmanuel Macron defended this Friday “a duty of European solidarity.”
“We will act as we have always done, with rigor but with humanity,” promised the President of the Republic.
The situation on the Italian island shows that “strictly nationalist approaches have their limits,” he said.
“Humanitarian approach”
Regarding immigrants arriving on Italian territory, “we must examine their file (…) and see if they are people with the right to asylum or if they are destined to return to their country,” he declared.
“The responsibility” of Europeans is also to “take care” of these immigrants, recalled Emmanuel Macron, who promotes “a humanitarian approach.” “Decisions will be made with Italy,” the head of state also announced.
