The chairman of the CDS-PP emphasized on Monday that the coalition with the PSD had achieved a “great victory” in the regional elections in Madeira and believed that the decision on possible agreements with other parties lies with Miguel Albuquerque.
“I remember most polls giving an interval margin that also predicted this result, and this result was a big win. Obviously an absolute majority would be much better than a win without an absolute majority, but I guess they won. all municipalities and the vast majority of parishes,” Nuno Melo emphasizes.
Speaking to Lusa, the MEP pointed out that the PSD and CDS-PP managed to elect 23 deputies as they were one elected member away from achieving an absolute majority. in defeat”.
The PS “lost eight deputies, only eleven were elected,” said the chairman of the CDS-PP.
“It was this purge that allowed for a dispersal of votes that led to a new multiplicity of political actors. That is why the PS was really the big loser on election night. So far no appeal has been made to the Secretary General of the PS to justify the hecatomb”said the centrist.
Nuno Melo believed that since the coalition failed to achieve an absolute majority, “it is necessary to find a solution that provides the necessary majority to govern, and it is known, after the President of the regional government and the president of PSD Madeira that these solutions will be channeled through a deputy of PAN or IL.”
“It is not for me, as chairman of a national party, to interfere in this,” he indicated when asked what the best option would be, insisting that it is an “exclusive issue for evaluating autonomy”.
“In a small electoral climate like Madeira, [há] always private and personal circumstances that play a role in the campaign and political dynamics that, apart from the strictly ideological question, can justify options. This assessment is the responsibility of the one who leads this coalition, namely Dr. Miguel Albuquerque, and whom I will respect without expressing an opinion on this matter,” said Nuno Melo.
The President of the CDS-PP also pointed out that “if Madeira’s results were converted into parliamentary elections, at this point there would have been a cycle change and the end of Dr. António Costa,” and that is why he refuses to do so. transform “the hecatomb of Doctor António Costa and the PS into silence and the victory of the PSD and CDS into a defeat”, as in his opinion “it is a great victory”.
When asked whether the PSD/CDS coalition could be replicated at the national level, Melo replied: “Anything can be a solution. I don’t think this is a solution for the PSD and what is important for me from our side is the preparation of the CDS for what is normal in a political party, namely that it only has to deal with elections.”
According to information provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the Social Democrats and Centrists obtained 43.13% of the votes and 23 seats in the regional parliament, consisting of a total of 47 deputies.
Following these elections, the number of parties represented in Madeira’s parliament will increase from five to nine in the next term.
Four years ago, the PSD elected 21 deputies, losing its first absolute majority since 1976, and formed a coalition government with the CDS-PP (three deputies).
