The Confederation of Peasants of Portugal (CAP) issued a statement on Tuesday expressing “its strong disagreement with the possibility of a decision by the PSD/Madeira, but also by its coalition partner CDS, to rely on the PAN in power stays. in that autonomous region”.
CAP states that it noted with surprise and outrage the possibility that the winning parties in Madeira’s regional elections could reach an agreement with the PAN to make the regional government viable.
This confederation states that it has repeatedly reiterated its opposition to this party “which places humans and animals on the same level, which states that “human and animal interests must be taken into account equally” and which places the struggle on the same ethical level. of humanity against slavery, racism or sexism with what it ironically calls the defense of animals.”
The Confederation also states that parties have a duty to inform voters in advance about the agreements they can make in the future.
CAP states that ecological and social sustainability and the defense of animal welfare are absolutely indispensable, but that this is done together with farmers and the rural world. “This is what CAP continues to defend, by striving for a balanced and sustainable increase in our agrofood and agroforestry production and our food sovereignty, in a European context.”
Finally, CAP hopes that the future regional government of Madeira “does not sacrifice its farmers and the development of agriculture in the region at the altar of the political conveniences of the day.”
Madeira went to the polls on Sunday and the PSD/CDS coalition won the elections, but lost the absolute majority by one vote. The leaders of the PAN and the Liberal Initiative (IL) were available to ensure political stability in Madeira.
