Environment Minister Duarte Cordeiro opined on Tuesday that the government cannot be insensitive to the impact of fuel prices on families today, despite having to try to punish the use of fossil fuels.
“We cannot become desensitized to the magnitude of the impact of this [os preços dos combustíveis] has in families, I don’t think even the Minister of the Environment can be insensitive to this,” said Duarte Cordeiro during the CNN conference on energy transition in Lisbon, after being asked about the reduction in the petroleum products tax (ISP) announced by the Ministry of Finance on Monday.
The government has decided to return the extra VAT revenue through a rebate on the Petroleum Products Tax (ISP), which will translate into an additional reduction of two cents per liter on diesel and one cent on petrol.
At the conference, which was marked by a protest by young student climate activists who threw green paint at the minister, Duarte Cordeiro stressed that governments must continue to invest in decarbonization, punishing individual mobility achieved with fossil fuels and forms of sustainable mobility.
“But at some point we cannot ignore the social consequences of the policy,” in a context of rising prices. repeated the ruler.
The conference was also attended by the executive presidents of EDP and Galp, Miguel Stilwell de Andrade and Filipe Silva respectively, who said they were analyzing the possibility of participating in the offshore wind farm auction that the government wants to launch this year launch.
Stilwell de Andrade said the decision will depend on a series of circumstances, which are not yet known because the specifications are not yet known, and warned about the costs of floating technology, which is still in an embryonic state.
From Galp’s side, one of the questions is who will pay for the additional costs of that technology.
“Like [o Governo] If you want a multi-candidate contest, you will need to have a price guarantee that is more expensive than what we currently have on the open market. If the intention is to further increase Portugal’s tariff deficit, it is not good for the taxpayer,” said Filipe Silva.
