The PAN/Madeira signed an agreement with the PSD/CDS coalition led by Miguel Albuquerque, allowing him to govern with majority support (24 deputies) in the regional parliament.
The terms of the agreement will be announced by Mónica Fonseca, the only PAN delegate elected last Sunday. The elected official was very clear that the PAN will have no presence in the regional government and that the agreement will only have parliamentary impact as it is stipulated to last four years.
The PAN received assurances from the PSD/CDS coalition of, among other things, the introduction of a tourist tax in the region and a free vaccination program for animals. The agreement was signed this morning and means that the PAN will, after analysis, make the regional government’s program and annual budgets feasible.
Mónica Fonseca also announced that the party will fire Joaquim Sousa as regional spokesperson for the PAN. Sousa was proposed as head of the list but was later removed, in a move involving the party’s national leadership.
The PAN was the seventh most voted for force in Madeira’s regional regions last Sunday. With 3046 votes (2.25%), he managed to elect the head of the list, Mónica Fonseca.
The PSD/CDS coalition led by Miguel Albuquerque won with 53.13% (58,399 votes) and 23 regional deputies were elected, one delegate away from gaining an absolute majority.
