Judicial Police: PS parliamentarians denounce a “dangerous” reform

This reform “runs the risk of making the judicial police disappear,” write the signatories.

The groups of socialist deputies and senators denounce a “dangerous” reform of the judicial police (PJ) carried out for the sake of “pure budgetary rationalization” by the Minister of the Interior, in a column published in the Sunday newspaper. “This model works, it inspires other countries. But now it is threatened”, writes in particular the president of the socialist group in the Senate Patrick Kanner and that of the PS group in the Assembly, Boris Vallaud.

“The police reform that is currently being tested in various departments, without anyone having the slightest evaluation principle, runs the risk of disappearing (the) PJ if it is finally generalized and applied without any lesson being drawn from the experiments,” the signatories fear.

“Justice doesn’t need to be slowed down or muzzled anymore”

“This reform, carried out without consultation and above all for pure budgetary rationalization, sacrifices everything to the fight against small and medium crime,” they warn, assuring that “haste would be irresponsible and would not silence disputes on the ground.”

For the signatories, “justice does not need to be slowed down or muzzled.” They are also surprised by “the deafening silence of the Keeper of the Seals”, Éric Dupond-Moretti, from whom they expect “a strong word to defend a pillar of the judicial institution”.

The expulsion on Friday of the head of the judicial police in the south of France, the day after an action by his troops against the reform of the PJ, aroused the general indignation of a normally silent institution, bringing hundreds of policemen to the street.

The reform of the PJ, carried out by Gérald Darmanin and the head of the national police, Frédéric Veaux, arouses enormous reluctance. The project plans to place all the police services of a department – intelligence, public security, border police (PAF) and PJ – under the authority of a single departmental director of the national police (DDPN), reporting to the prefect.
