Madeira: Nuno Melo says the agreement is between PSD and PAN and that CDS preferred an agreement with IL

The chairman of the CDS-PP pointed out on Tuesday that the parliamentary influence agreement in Madeira was reached between PSD and PAN, “a process [que] ignored the centrists, pointing out that he would have preferred an agreement with the Liberal Initiative.

In a conversation with Lusa, Nuno Melo said that this is the solution “the result of an agreement between the PSD/Madeira and the PAN, in which the CDS did not participate”being the “agreement of the president of the regional government”.

The CDS-PP president also pointed out that the party led by Inês de Sousa Real, who elected a regional deputy, “is not part of the regional government of Madeira.” “Only the PSD and CDS-PP are part of the government,” he emphasized.

The centrist leader also pointed out that regional party structures “have their own statutes, are autonomous” and make decisions “without the interference of parties at the national level.”

“For the CDS at national level, the PAN is a party that ideologically has nothing to do with the CDS and for which the CDS fights”he emphasized, taking that into consideration “the CDS is closer to IL than to PAN”.

Nuno Melo indicated that, “As far as the CDS is concerned, it is clear that between the option for the PAN or the Liberal Initiative is the option for the Liberal Initiative”.

“Nevertheless, I admit that regional circumstances in a small territorial space and where people know each other, personal aspects may have been important in a decision whose contours I do not know, because I did not participate in it”the MEP emphasized.

The leader of the CDS-PP stated that “the process went beyond the CDS”, a party that was “not part of the talks” that took place between PSD and PAN.

Nuno Melo has also thought about that “the matters that have been made public regarding the agreement between PSD and PAN with parliamentary influence are innocuous matters that are difficult to refuse by any party in the Legislative Assembly” of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and a number of agreed measures “were already part of the coalition’s programme”.

The Somos Madeira coalition (PSD/CDS-PP) won the regional parliamentary elections in Madeira on Sunday, but failed to obtain an absolute majority with one deputy, which requires it to win 24 of the 47 seats in the parliament of the archipelago.

The elected PAN deputy, Mónica Freitas, announced on Tuesday that she has signed a four-year parliamentary advocacy agreement with the PSD/CDS-PP coalition, allowing for an absolute majority in the hemisphere.
