The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, devalued the comment he made about a young woman’s cleavage during his official visit to Canada. “It is a comment that is typical of me,” he analyzed.
“You still get the flu, did you see that, with that cleavage?” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, 74 years old at the time, who was widely criticized after later refusing that it was not a sexist comment. In Wednesday’s edition of the weekly Tal&Qual, the head of government again downplayed the episode, saying: “I have always been original and irreverent.”
On Wednesday, the president responded to last week’s headline in the weekly magazine Tal&Qual, in which the newspaper wondered whether Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was “in his right mind”. To the same newspaper, the head of state assured: “I am not crazy, I am the same as I have always been, but I promise that as soon as the first sign is endorsed by experts or felt by me, I will call Tal&Qual and let them know that I’m in trouble.”
Still regarding the question posed by the weekly in last week’s headline, the President of the Republic said that he did not understand it: “What is the reason for saying that I am politically weak and that I am crazy?” , he asked.
“There could be a reason. That the end of his mandate is approaching, that the president is losing political weight and is trying to compensate through his narcissism or his pathological egocentrism…” he told the newspaper. “Maybe age, maybe institutional conflict, this and that,” he continued. “But no. There is no research that confirms that I am losing political weight,” the head of state stated.
In his statements to the weekly, the President of the Republic also said that “whoever enters politics is subject to all controls, even characterological controls”, but stressed that “the Portuguese have known him for decades”.
