Ribau Esteves, president of the Chamber of Aveiro, guaranteed on Friday that he will not run for any municipality in the 2025 municipal elections.
Ribau Esteves is serving his seventh term as mayor of the neighboring municipalities of Ílhavo and Aveiro, and announced the decision when presenting the program for the Congress of the Intermunicipal Community of the Region, which he will no longer preside on the 23rd.
Speaking about his “definitive departure from municipal life”, Ribau Esteves justified that “the presidency cannot be immortalized”, before the executive body of the CIRA, which will be chaired by his colleague from Murtosa, Joaquim Batista, “after almost 22 years as chairman of the association of municipalities, which is unique in the country.”
The transfer of power, agreed shortly after the last local elections, will take place at the CIRA Intermunicipal Council, which will take place on the 23rd in Ovar, but before that, on the 13th, Ribau Esteves will say goodbye to the Intermunicipal Assembly.
It will be an extraordinary session to debate the territorial development strategy that will be submitted for financing from the Portugal 2030 program and presented to the Congress of the Aveiro Region.
As for the CIRA Congress, which starts on the 15th with a concert of Filarmonia das Beiras at the Ovar Arts Center, and which takes place every two years, “it will maintain in the various legal formulations the matrix of 34 years of community”, from an association of municipalities to the metropolitan area, to the current Intermunicipal Community, with the geography of the municipalities bordering the Ria.
It is the Ria and Baixo Vouga Lagunar that draw attention, with the presentation on the 16th, at the BioRia Interpretation Center, of the “primary system” publicly tendered for implementation.
On the same day, members of Congress will be taken to visit the construction work on the Rio Novo do Príncipe bridge dam, which has been going on since May and is diverting the course of the Vouga River.
Another highlight of the program is the conference “Aveiro Region – Plans and Projects”, on the 18th, in Albergaria-a-Velha, which will be attended by the Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, and the Minister of Territorial Cohesion. Ana Abrunhosa.
This includes presenting a new investment framework and explaining the ‘new life’ of the Polis Litoral Ria de Aveiro programme.
The day before, in Oliveira do Bairro, an assessment will be made of what has been done by the 28 groups in the field of education, with the program designed to combat school dropout in the region and promote educational success, discussing the objectives with the new financing framework . .
Sever do Vouga is organizing a meeting on the 20th to discuss the program of the Portuguese Capital of Culture 2024.
The Congress will end with a conference on territorial development, the first session of which will be chaired by the new President of CIRA, Joaquim Batista, with a panel dedicated to forestry, energy and business and another panel on tourism, Ria and the sea.
