Budget, march against the cost of living… After a nightmarish comeback, the Nupes hope for better days

The left lived a very complicated month of September, caught between several cases of alleged violence. But MEPs hope that the 2023 budget, like the demonstration scheduled for next weekend, will allow them to regain strength.

After a catastrophic month of September, find some oxygen. La Nupes wants to leave behind the Quatennens case, the Bayou case and the internal wars that undermined their month of September. With one hope: to embarrass the government in the coming weeks.

“We went on vacation, tired but happy. We come back with our heads in the bucket. You already have to eat lion ”, summarizes a rebel in broad strokes.

a tense union

“We received a big blow to the head,” says another La France insoumise elect, who is still struggling to digest the withdrawal of Adrien Quatennens, who admitted acts of domestic violence against his wife.

It hardly seemed that the party had managed to get its head out of the water, between Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s controversial tweet and a lunar press conference, it was the environmentalists’ turn to plunge into chaos. Targeted by accusations of psychological violence by a former colleague -which he denies-, Julien Bayou has withdrawn from the co-presidency of the EELV group in the National Assembly and from the leadership of his party.

This seriously worries the left-wing guild that had already been put to the test during the Festival of Humanity in early September. Fabien Roussel, the head of the communists, already reluctant to ally himself with La France insoumise during the legislative elections, had put his foot on the plate by opposing the “allocations left” to the “labour left”. Enough to create unanimity against him and give the allies of the left the air of intimate enemies.

“No more time to lose to counter Macron”

But the Nupes have an opportunity: the government’s agenda that will multiply potentially explosive bills. Unemployment insurance reform to modulate the duration of compensation voted in mid-October, budget that begins this Monday, pensions next January… So many highly inflammable texts in the current social context and that should make unanimity against it in the seats on the left.

“We are in a strategy of extermination of our social model. We have no more time to lose to counter Macron”, defends the deputy Sandra Regol, the environmentalist number 2.

Proof that the allies know how to come to an agreement: the entire Nupes asks for a tax on super-profits. Several energy and shipping giants have reaped record profits in recent months, including TotalEnergies, which doubled its record second-quarter net profit. That unifies the left from the rebels to the socialists, since all the leaders of the left formations validated Olivier Faure’s initiative for a shared initiative referendum.

“Despite the stances and positions taken in the media, we know how to create unity in action,” rejoices LFI MP Christophe Bex.

A march against expensive life that is causing a stir

To show off its muscles, La France Insoumise is betting big on its “march against the high cost of living” on October 16. If Nupes’s allies hesitated for a while to participate, eventually everyone will be present, including the communists who have long been hesitant to go, for fear of angering the unions.

With a trick: figures from social movements in their ranks such as Rachel Kéké who brought down the hotel giant Accor, the anti-globalization figure Aurélie Trouvou or the student unionist Louis Boyard.

But forceps unanimity can sometimes come back like a boomerang. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s tweet comparing this demonstration to the French Revolution upsets Olivier Faure and Sandrine Rousseau, who have nevertheless supported Nupes from the beginning. It is not enough, however, to annul his presence.

Stick together to beat Le Pen

Do the Nupes really have a choice anyway? Since the victory of Giorgia Meloni, the patron saint of the far-right Fratelli d’Italia movement, in the Italian legislative elections, Marine Le Pen’s rise to the Elysee in 2027 seems very likely for the left.

“We are all aware that unity is our great strength so that the left can move forward,” says rebel deputy Yannick Maudet. Last June, an Elabe poll for BFMTV indicated that Marine Le Pen represented 43% opposition to Emmanuel Macron, 9 points ahead of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
