“We will not let you do it”: the deputies are already crossing swords for the vote on the budget in the Assembly

In an atmosphere of discord, MEPs began this afternoon to examine the finance project. The rebels asked the government not to use 49.3. For her part, Marine Le Pen criticized the “disastrous record” of the executive.

The exchanges were certainly muffled, but they set the tone for the next few days. The debate on the 2023 budget began this afternoon in the Assembly, predicting electric debates and a probable approval of the text by 49.3.

It was Bruno Le Maire who got the ball rolling. The Economy Minister promised “not a battle” but “a debate” on the Treasury Bill. If the maneuver intends to show that the debate is still open, Gabriel Attal gave another speech.

“Our collective responsibility is not to give the spectacle of getting bogged down at a time when our country so badly needs to rise to the challenges”, launched the Delegate Minister of Public Accounts.

From the left we criticize the government’s austerity and growth forecasts considered too optimistic by the Court of Auditors, while the right believes, on the contrary, that there is too much planned spending in this text. Which makes it almost impossible to vote for the executive that only has a relative majority and has to rely on 49.3.

“Unfair, expensive and certainly inefficient”

This article of the Constitution allows suspending the examination of a text and adopting it, subject to the responsibility commitment of the government.

Éric Coquerel, for his part, asked the Government not to use it.

“I solemnly ask the government not to launch 49.3 (…) The debate must take place,” requested the rebellious president of the Finance Commission.

The same story of Manuel Bompard. The LFI deputy asked the government to listen to the opposition in the debate that opens in the Assembly.

“We will not let you do it. We will be that alternative force that the French need. Another budget is possible and we will work to make it happen this Sunday, October 16,” he criticized, reproaching the Executive for not having “anything better to offer than putting on turtleneck sweaters and turning off the Wi-Fi”.

Marine Le Pen, for her part, also used this opportunity to criticize the government’s action. “His plan for her budget is in line with her policy: unfair, costly and certainly inefficient,” she said.

Outright rejection of the main opposition groups that, therefore, will not silence those who call to resort to 49.3.
