Parliamentarians from Palestine and Iran were dissatisfied with Duarte Pacheco’s speech at the UIP

Parliamentarians from Palestine, Iran and other delegations present this Monday at the opening of the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union expressed their dissatisfaction with the speech of the organization’s president, Duarte Pacheco, on the conflict in the Middle East , and shouted: “shame”.

The protest came shortly after Duarte Pacheco, who is preparing to end his three-year term in office, delivered the opening speech at the meeting, which is taking place in Luanda this week.

Before the musical moment that would follow the ceremony, some parliamentarians passed by the gallery, where the Portuguese delegate, the Angolan President and the President of the National Assembly were located. They expressed outrage and shouted “shame on you,” an excitement that continued. a couple of minutes.

A source attached to a delegation told Lusa that the speech was not only poorly received by representatives from Palestine, but also by representatives from Iran, Kuwait, Syria, Algeria and South Africa, who considered the speech “biased.”

“(Duarte Pacheco) spoke about Israel’s right to defend itself, but he did not speak about Israeli crimes against civilians, especially children”the source said.

This Monday, Duarte Pacheco discussed the topic of global conflicts, highlighting Ukraine and Israel and opining that Angola is the right country to talk about peace.

About 1,500 delegates from 130 countries will be in Luanda this week, gathered under the motto “Parliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions”, to participate in the 147th General Assembly of the IPU.
