The Prime Minister believes that it would be inexplicable not to focus all energy on the success of the reform of the National Health Service (SNS), at a time when, he guaranteed, there are more financial and human resources.
In an opinion article published on Monday in the Público newspaper, without direct references to the dispute between medical unions and the government, António Costa responds to António Sarmento, head of department and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, who spoke on Friday fair, also in an article, addressed the Prime Minister and asked him “what he thinks of the SNS”.
“Now that we have more financial resources and more human resources, it would be inexplicable if we did not focus our energies on the successful reform of your organization. As always, with the active involvement of healthcare professionals, whose careers and working conditions we value,” António Costa wrote after taking stock of the situation of the SNS and the measures taken by his government.
The head of government acknowledges that “with all the many problems that the SNS faces, the activity of its professionals is truly impressive, which is especially illustrated by the increase in the number of consultations and operations with values above 2015.
In the article summarizing the changes underway in the organization of the National Health Service, António Costa summarizes that “the revolution underway in the SNS” is the result of the decision to “strengthen resources, organize capacity management , optimize the healthcare delivery model”. care and qualify facilities and equipment”.
“I have no doubt that the guarantee of an SNS with the characteristics enshrined in our Constitution depends on the ability of everyone to mobilize in the reform of the organization,” he said.
Last week, Doctor António Sarmento asked the government official to publicly answer a number of questions that he said “millions of Portuguese would also like to see answered.”
The head of service and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto asked several questions, namely what the government’s plans are so that, due to the inability to compete with the private sector, the SNS becomes increasingly depleted of doctors and their institutions without scientific, training, clinical and human quality, knowing that millions of Portuguese have no alternatives.”
“You finally realize that we are on the brink of a catastrophe that could cause the loss of many lives,” the doctor asked in the six-question article.
