The resignation of Health Minister Marta Temido, announced on Tuesday, marks the first “weight loss” in the XXIIIth constitutional government, which took office exactly five months ago, on March 30.
On May 2, there was already a change in the third executive led by António Costa: on that day, the President of the Republic accepted the Prime Minister’s proposal to replace Sara Guerreiro with Isabel Rodrigues as Secretary of State for Equality and Migration. but in a change that happened at her own request “and because of illness”.
The resignation of Marta Temido, already accepted by the prime minister, was reported this morning, but this Tuesday morning, a source close to António Costa told Lusa that the replacement of the health minister “will not be soon”, adding that the chief of the government would like to see this ruler complete the process of defining the new executive direction of the SNS.
“The Minister of Health, Marta Temido, presented today [terça-feira] his resignation from the Prime Minister because he understood that he could no longer remain in office,” the note sent to the editors this morning reads.
Marta Temido began her duties as health minister in October 2018, succeeding Adalberto Campos Fernandes, and served as minister during the last three executives led by socialist António Costa.
At the last PS Congress, in August 2021, he joined the party, with the card delivered by António Costa and his name was even included among the possible successors to the current PS secretary general.
During her tenures, Marta Temido has been central to managing the pandemic, which started in 2020 but also went through several controversies. Recently, the closure of emergency obstetric services at several hospitals due to a lack of doctors to fill the trays has put a strain on custody.
