Pedro Nuno Santos’ candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the PS stated on Monday that it already has the support of 199 socialist council coordinators on the mainland, a total of 277, representing about 77%.
The direct internal elections in the PS to succeed António Costa as leader of the PS are scheduled for December 15 and 16 and according to the Congress Organizing Committee (COC), the electoral universe consists of 80,000 socialists, who will be able to vote as long as the contributions paid by the end of this month.
On the ground, in addition to Pedro Nuno Santos, there are already candidates for the former deputy secretary general of the PS and the current Minister of the Interior, José Luís Carneiro, and the Socialist leader Daniel Adrião.
A note accompanying the list of expressions of support from municipal leaders for the candidacy of the former Minister of Infrastructure and Housing states that the number of candidates in these structures could increase in the coming weeks, during the internal campaign period.
Per district, Pedro Nuno Santos supports 15 council presidents from Aveiro (this candidate’s constituency), eight from Beja, 10 from Braga, eight from Bragança, three from Castelo Branco, 15 from Coimbra, 13 from Évora, 12 from Faro, 11 from Guarda , eight from Leiria and eight from Lisbon (a number that also includes municipalities in the Western Federation).
Still according to the same list, Pedro Nuno Santos supports 11 municipal leaders from the district of Portalegre, 15 from Porto, 17 from Santarém, 12 from Setúbal, nine from Viana do Castelo, eight from Vila Real and 16 from Viseu.
In terms of number of activists, Porto is the largest PS federation, followed by the Lisbon Urban Area Federation (FAUL). The presidents of these two federations, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues (Porto) and Duarte Cordeiro (FAUL), have already expressed their support for the candidacy of Pedro Nuno Santos.
