The candidate for the post of Secretary General of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, refuses to participate in debates with the other leadership candidates, believing that these confrontations would “generate right-wing arguments” and claiming that “a lot of space” to discuss internally.
“We have many spaces to debate with our comrades, this work will be done by the different candidates, we have interviews, we have participation in meetings with activists where the media are present… It is more than enough,” said Pedro Nuno Santos .
The former minister argued that “more than that” at this point is “giving arguments to the right.”
The candidate spoke to journalists outside Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital, after lunch with socialist leader and president of Sedes – Association for Economic and Social Development, Álvaro Beleza.
“We want to debate with our comrades in other ways,” he emphasized.
Pedro Nuno Santos pointed out that the internal process for electing the new PS leader is taking place “very close to the parliamentary elections” to be held on March 10 and said that when they “discuss the country with the opponents of the PS, there is a certainty that these debates will take place.”
So far, three candidates have been nominated for the socialist direct elections on December 15 and 16: the current Minister of the Interior, José Luís Carneiro, the former Minister of Infrastructure Pedro Nuno Santos and Daniel Adrião, leader of the minority line opposed to the current general. secretary, António Costa.
