On October 12, 1972, then-student José Ribeiro Santos, aged 26, was shot by a PIDE agent during a rally of university students against the regime’s oppression. He would die that day, in the hospital of Santa Maria. One of the “important events” in the life of António Garcia Pereira, as the lawyer, friend of Ribeiro Santos, and former militant of the PCTP-MRPP, assumes against the DN.
“It was a crime that cost the regime a lot of money. After the death of Ribeiro Santos [numa quinta-feira]Friday was all about Lisbon being turned upside down, with people joining the protests,” he says, reporting on the fateful day: “When the meeting is held, a person is seen in the amphitheater of the Higher Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences [atual Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, ISEG] took notes about who was speaking and it soon became apparent, by the students, that it was a “mustache” from the PIDE. At one point, two officers arrive on the scene and, after the first is tied up, the second fires the weapon – which was already loaded – hitting Ribeiro Santos in the chest and José Lamego.
