Costa sees the invitation to the G20 as a ‘great responsibility’ and guarantees ‘maximum commitment’

The Prime Minister, António Costa, believed on Saturday that Brazil’s invitation to Portugal to be an observer of the G20, a group that unites the world’s largest economies, constitutes “a great responsibility” and indicated that it will be undertaken with “maximum effort”.

“The invitation that Brazil has extended to Portugal to participate in the G20 gives us great honor,” he began writing the outgoing head of government on his official account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

António Costa believed that Brazil’s invitation is “above all a sign of the excellence of the relations between the two countries”.

“But it is also a great responsibility, which we will take on with maximum commitment in the coming year,” he guaranteed.

The Brazilian government announced on Friday that it has invited Portugal and Angola as observer countries of the G20 during the country’s presidency of the group.

In a statement, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry recalled that “historically, the G20 presidencies invite non-member countries and international organizations to participate in meetings on their calendar of events.”

In addition to Portugal and Angola, the Brazilian presidency also invited Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Nigeria, Norway and Singapore.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) had already commented on the invitation on the same day, stating that Portugal “accepted with satisfaction Brazil’s invitation to participate in the G20, which translated into permanent supervision of the group’s work of twenty largest economies on a flat world”.

During the Brazilian presidency of the G20, which runs until November 30, 2024, Portugal, together with the other invited countries, will “fully participate in the work of this important international platform for dialogue and political-economic coordination,” the Portuguese executive said . .

“Portugal sees itself in the priorities highlighted by the G20 Presidency, in particular regarding social inclusion and the fight against inequality, hunger and poverty; the fight against climate change and sustainable development; as well as the reform of international institutions” , also referred to the MNE memorandum.

The Portuguese Government also believes that, through its active participation in the G20, it will contribute to a successful Brazilian Presidency, which will reflect the commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation as essential tools to face growing global challenges.
