Carneiro says it is necessary to “avoid the polarization of society and politics”

Candidate for the post of PS Secretary General José Luís Carneiro said on Monday that it is necessary to be “radically moderate” to avoid contributing to the polarization of society and politics.

“We must be radically moderate. It means that we must avoid contributing to the polarization of society and politics. Excessive polarization leads to encapsulation and we must avoid encapsulation in society”, defended the candidate for PS leader and Minister of the Interior this afternoon in Guarda.

“We cannot let our backs be turned. We have to talk to each other because that is what the Portuguese want. They want predictability, stability and security,” he emphasized.

José Luís Carneiro emphasized that “those who want fundamental rights, a national health care system, a public school and social protection also expect predictable conditions at the service of the country.”

The candidate recalled his proposal to place public services “in areas where they can have a significant impact”.

“That is why, as Minister of the Interior, I decided that the GNR Emergency Protection and Assistance Unit would remain in Guarda, fulfilling a promise that had been put into practice,” he argued.

During a visit to the multinational of Tunisian origin Coficab, at the Guarda Logistics Platform, José Luís Carneiro emphasized that investments domestically are essential “for a policy of social and economic territorial cohesion capable of creating jobs and living conditions for people” .

The candidate recalled that the strategic motion of his candidacy “includes an approach to these areas, the so-called territorial development contracts”.

He explained that these are contracts to be concluded with certain low-density regions that will rely on public financing to remove obstacles to their development, in a similar model tested by Elisa Ferreira when she was Minister of Planning.

He also highlighted the series of other proposals related to supporting companies, including financing for hiring young doctorates who can contribute to the technological shock of modernizing the management structure.

“To act as an impetus for companies to adapt to challenges, both technological and related to energy and the reduction of energy consumption,” he clarified.

The PS leadership candidate heard João Cardoso, head of technology and operations at the Coficab group, talk about the company’s difficulties, especially in securing qualified workers.
