The President of the Republic declared this Sunday that the protection of human rights on his International Day “remains a current need, and at the present time even more important” than in other periods of history.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa marked the International Day of Human Rights, celebrated this Sunday, with a message on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, associating himself with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres.
“On this day, the President of the Republic, in collaboration with the Secretary General of the United Nations, emphasizes that human rights are the solution to many of the world’s problems, warning of the many guises in which they can be violated : wars. , gender violence, the climate crisis, the erosion of confidence in multilateralism,” he says.
In the message, the head of state emphasizes that this year’s date also marks the celebration of 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“The 30 articles of the Declaration transcend values, cultures and borders, systematize a set of universal, indivisible and inalienable rights and recognize the equal dignity and worth of every person,” he stressed.
In other words, “75 years ago and for the first time in history, the international community agreed on a set of values and recognized that rights are inherent to all people and are not granted or withdrawn by any particular state.”
“The celebration of this historic milestone underlines not only the longevity of this commitment, but also its importance. Protecting human rights remains a contemporary necessity, and even more important today than perhaps at other periods in our common history.” he says.
The President of the Republic calls for this celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be carried out “with conscience” and for “its commitment to make it count in everyone’s daily life.”
Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10, following the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
