Paulo Raimundo tops the CDU list for Lisbon in the parliamentary elections

PCP general secretary Paulo Raimundo will head the CDU list for Lisbon in the early parliamentary elections on March 10, the coalition announced on Wednesday, proposing deputy Alfredo Maia as head of the list in Porto.

Paulo Raimundo makes his debut as head of the list in parliamentary elections, replacing former PCP general secretary Jerónimo de Sousa, who has led the list for Lisbon since the 2005 parliamentary elections.

Raimundo took over the leadership of the PCP in November 2022 and a short bibliographic note released today by the CDU mentions that he is a worker, was elected to the Setúbal City Council and was the leader of a youth and student association .

He was “a member of the Political Commission of the PCP Central Committee from 2000 to 2016, of the Secretariat of the Central Committee from 2016 to 2020, and of both bodies since 2020,” he said.

In Porto, the CDU list will be headed by Alfredo Maia, currently a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, and who, according to a bibliographic note released by the CDU, is a journalist and was leader of the Union of Journalists.

Alfredo Maia thus replaces Diana Ferreira, who was elected party leader in the Porto constituency in the 2022 parliamentary elections, but has since resigned after being replaced by historian Manuel Loff and Alfredo Maia.

The CDU states that Alfredo Maia has been a member of Jornal de Notícias since 1988, was elected from the CDU in the municipal assemblies of Maia and Porto and is a member of the Porto intellectual sector of the PCP.

In Beja, the CDU again presents deputy João Dias as party leader, similar to what had already happened in the 2022 and 2019 parliamentary elections, in which he always managed to be elected. The deputy was also elected to the Assembly of the Republic, in the Beja circle, in the 2015 parliamentary elections.

João Dias is a nurse, has worked in the local health department of Baixo Alentejo and in the long-term care department of the Beja health center, and was also elected from the CDU to the municipal council of Beja.

In Braga, Professor Sandra Cardoso is the CDU’s choice to head the list, which will be her debut in the parliamentary elections. According to the bibliographic note, she has a PhD in design and innovation in training and is part of “teams of several national projects of the Ministry of Education”.

Sandra Cardoso was elected to the Braga City Council in the last municipal elections, is leader of the Northern Teachers Union and is a member of the PCP regional organization in Braga.

These are the first four constituencies in which the CDU will announce its party leaders. In the last parliamentary elections, in 2022, the CDU elected two deputies in Lisbon, one in Porto and the other in Beja, while in Braga it failed to gain representation and finished in fifth place.

In total, the CDU elected six deputies in the last parliamentary elections, reaching a historic minimum that led to the Ecologists Party Os Verdes (PEV) losing its parliamentary representation.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, signed the government’s resignation decision on Thursday (which came into effect on Friday), a month after the Prime Minister tendered his resignation to the Head of State on November 7, who immediately accepted it. and subsequently decided to dissolve parliament and schedule early parliamentary elections for March 10.

The Prime Minister, António Costa, submitted his resignation to the President of the Republic on November 7 due to a judicial investigation into the installation of a data center in Sines and lithium and hydrogen companies, prompting the Public Prosecutor’s Office to launch an independent investigation. at the Supreme Court where it is addressed.
