PR expects “clear solution” in the law of incompatibilities

The President of the Republic today urged the parties to find in parliament “a clear solution in law and politics” on the law of incompatibilities of holders of public office, to put an end to the “amendments ” in the legislation.

“I used a message addressed to the Assembly of the Republic to ask the parties, all of them, to consider very different laws, which are 40 years old, which are shreds of shreds, touches of touches, to come up with a clear solution. found in the law, and thus clearly in politics,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in statements to journalists.

The head of state spoke in Amarante, in the Porto district, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the program commemorating the birth of Agustina Bessa Luís, who comes from that county.

Still talking about incompatibilities, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he expected the parties’ reaction to the message he sent to parliament, recalling that the President of the Republic in Portugal does not have the legislative initiative.

On Friday, two days after sending a message to parliament, Marcelo took the opportunity to press for the request for a review of the incompatibilities legislation in the sense of “collecting laws that have been passed since 1983 are many, there are many, many, many, and very confused between themselves, to have clear legislation on such an important issue”.

According to the president, “it must be considered, because it corresponds to a legal concern, which is the clarity of the law, as the Attorney General (PGR) says, and on the other hand to a political concern, which is clarity of the law. political clarity”.

The president’s proposal, which comes at a time when news broke of alleged incompatibilities by several government officials, such as the new health minister, has not been supported by all parties.

The PSD, the party that led Rebelo de Sousa from 1996 to 1999, argued that now is “not the right time” to review the law, while the PS believed there are “interpretative doubts” that need to be clarified.

On the left, the PCP said it was available to seek “balanced, more transparent, clearer solutions” to incompatibilities in parliament.

The Left Bloc stated that the priority in terms of incompatibilities is to put into operation the Transparency entity, which was approved by parliament in 2019 but has not yet got off the ground, although it admits to improving the current regime.

Chega’s leader announced Friday evening that he will table a second censure motion to the government if the cases of alleged incompatibilities involving several ministers of António Costa’s socialist executive are not properly clarified.
