A bill to ban bullfighting will soon be debated in the National Assembly

A bill by rebel MP Aymeric Caron to ban bullfighting has been under consideration since Wednesday in the Law Commission. The former journalist intends to group beyond the left while the majority of the French are in favor of the abolition of this practice.

Ban bullfighting. A bill to this effect reaches the Law Commission on Wednesday and will be examined in the National Assembly on November 24 during the parliamentary niche of La France insoumise (LFI). It is worn by the rebel deputy from Paris Aymeric Caron. The former journalist is known for his anti-species commitment, that is, against exploitation and forms of animal abuse.

Currently, the penal code criminalizes acts of cruelty to animals, but makes an exception for “uninterrupted local traditions” such as bullfighting. To prohibit it is to collide with the fans attached to this local custom. In Parliament, environmentalists tried twice, in 2013 and 2021. Without success.

However, Aymeric Caron intends to base himself on a “point of view shared by the majority of the French”, as he explained this summer. The figures are, indeed, irrefutable. According to an Ifop survey carried out last February by the 30 million friends foundation, 77% of the French are in favor of banning bullfighting. As expected, the trend is reversed in localities with a bullfighting tradition (Arles, Bayonne, Béziers, Dax, Mont-de-Marsan, Nîmes and Vic-Fezensac): 72% of the inhabitants are in favor of maintaining bullfighting , according to a survey carried out by Ifop and Sud Radio last June.

Renaissance and RN MPs should vote on the bill

To convey his text, Aymeric Caron hopes to gather a wide range. Further to the left then. Therefore, his bill is intended to be multi-party. The various political formations in the National Assembly do not speak with one voice on the issue. At the National Rally, several deputies should vote for Aymeric Caron’s text. This is the case, for example, of Julien Odoul, deputy for Yonne.

“The cause is more important than political differences,” he stresses in the parisian.

The RN deputy for Seine-et-Marne Béatrice Roullaud also indicated that she was in favor of this bill. “I will gladly vote for the abolition of bullfighting! I don’t judge those who love her, but true torture is inflicted on the bull in this rigged and unfair bullfight that survives only on public subsidies that would be better spent elsewhere!” the animal law graduate said on Twitter in late October. .

As for the presidential field, the Executive deployed the color. He “does not want to establish prohibition regimes”, as the government spokesman, Olivier Véran, recalled this Sunday on BFMTV.

“After two and a half years of a prohibition regime to protect people in the context of the Covid crisis, let’s be careful not to put new restrictions, new standards on people,” he justified.

Dupond-Moretti to defend the position of the executive?

It is also a question of priorities for the former Minister of Health. He thus mentioned “many limitations”, more important, such as “inflation” or “the war in Ukraine”. However, “the majority will have their freedom to vote”, stressed Olivier Véran. And she should wear it. In her ranks there are several deputies in favor of the ban on bullfighting.

Including their leader, Aurore Bergé, who is also currently on maternity leave. The former Jupeista had signed a platform in July 2021 in the JDD to call for the abolition of “this barbaric practice”. At his side, another 35 parliamentarians from the majority but also from the Les Républicains party.

The government has not yet revealed the minister it would choose to defend the executive’s position. The Keeper of the Seals Éric Dupond-Moretti, defender of bullfighting, volunteered.
