“He is not sentenced to life imprisonment”: Bompard defends a return of Quatennens

For the rebel deputy, it is “normal” that LFI “work collectively on the conditions for the return of Adrien Quatennens” to the National Assembly.

Adrien Quatennens back at the Palais Bourbon? The idea is gaining ground in La France insoumise (LFI). “None of the deputies of our political group has asked for his resignation. From that moment on it is normal that collectively, we work, we think together […] to the conditions [d’un] come back,” declared Bouches-du-Rhône rebel deputy Manuel Bompard on BFMTV-RMC on Tuesday. While he was tempering: “It will take as long as it takes.”

Adrien Quatennens resigned from his duties as LFI coordinator on September 18. That day he acknowledged in a statement domestic violence against his wife, Céline Quatennens, including a slap. His wife filed two complaints against him and is the subject of an investigation by the Lille public prosecutor’s office for “spousal violence”.

If he no longer sits in the Palais Bourbon for almost two months, the deputy from the North has not resigned from his parliamentary mandate. In addition, he continued to vote remotely despite his absence. This weekend he signed his first public intervention since his withdrawal in reacting to the collapse of two buildings in Lille.

A sanction “proportionate to the seriousness of the offense”

On BFMTV, Manuel Bompard admits that Adrien Quatennens was wrong. He himself “admitted and recognized it”, he emphasizes. The Rebel Strategist continues:

“When you make a mistake, when you admit a mistake, there has to be a penalty, it’s obvious. But this sanction must be proportional to the seriousness of the offense that we have recognized”.

And Manuel Bompard to defend an Adrien Quatennens who is not “sentenced to life imprisonment”. A speech along the lines of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The LFI leader quickly waved to demand the return of the colt from him. “I think he has to come back,” he said on October 9.

Still, the case is sensitive among the rebels. In a party whose members often sing in unison, some personalities have distanced themselves, however, from the words of Jean-Luc Mélenchon at the beginning of the affair. The tribune had initially praised the “courage” and “dignity” of Adrien Quatennens, without a word for the victim, thus creating unrest in his camp.

Asked on France Inter’s Political Questions program about the return of Adrien Quatennens, Sandrine Rousseau considered this scenario “impossible” in the immediate future. For the ecologist deputy from Paris, the rebel must “show women, especially abused women, that her return to politics can serve this fight (the fight against violence against women).”
