PCP calls on Saramago, the writer of the “working people” who contributed to democratic Portugal

The PCP inaugurated this Wednesday the Portuguese Nobel Prize in Literature José Saramago, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, as a writer from the “working people” and who made an “invaluable contribution” to a country “with a future” . .

In a statement, the PCP recalled the birth of Saramago, “one of the greatest writers in the Portuguese language, one of Portugal’s foremost intellectuals in April, a communist militant”.

José Saramago, a communist militant, was “a writer who came from working people, whom he loved and was loyal to”, and he was a man who “loved April, with all that it entailed in terms of dreams , transformation and progressive progress”. .

“More than a style, he invented an innovative oral writing rhythm, which was not limited to narration for those who read, but to actively participate in the narration, develop the story and give it back to all who did not write it. .”, the party supported in the same note.

The award of the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1998, “opened new doors for the projection of Portuguese literature” at the international level and made Saramago an “ambassador of culture and language, projecting them in the most diverse corners of the world”.

“An award, a work and an intense activity that served our country, projected and gave prestige to Portuguese culture across borders, helping to make our literature a respected and permanent reference, in the context of the universal literary culture” said the communists.

And Saramago did not distance the writer from the militant: “Without this condition, the human masses, the collective hero who walks through his books, would not move with the same brilliance and would not feel in many of them the painful, tragic, uplifting feeling.” , contradictory, luminous, dark, ceaseless movement of history.”

Saramago’s works, to the communist leadership, “are immortal” for conveying “universal values such as freedom, democracy, social emancipation, solidarity, sovereignty, peace, cooperation and friendship between peoples”.

“José Saramago – the author of a huge and unique work of universal value, in which there is a sensitive and deeply human gaze – has made an invaluable contribution to this goal, to this struggle. A struggle that continues for a better world, for a Portugal with a future,” the PCP concluded.
