Bullfight: MEPs reject its ban in committee

The deputies rejected this Wednesday for the first time in commission the proposal to ban the bullfights of LFI Aymeric Caron, which has little chance of success, but which sparks heated debates and demonstrations next weekend.

The elected members of the Legal Commission supported amendments RN and LR to remove the only article from the text. This vote does not prevent its examination in the chamber on November 24, if the deadlines allow it, with a tight schedule to go through the proposals of the LFI group.

Faced with the protests, Aymeric Caron immediately denounced the “great pressure from the lobbies.”

Put an end to the “sadism” of which the bulls would be victims

Opening the debates, the former journalist criticized the “barbarism” of bullfighting, a “hypocritical ceremony, where the supposedly honored animal is massacred with a precision and refinement that borders on sadism.”

In a serious atmosphere, the deputy from Paris carefully described the “execution” of the bull. He criticized the bullfighting elect for “electoral maneuvers” so as “not to offend certain voters in the bullfighting regions.”

Its text intends to modify the Criminal Code that already punishes animal abuse, but whose penalties provided for in article 521-1 “are not applicable to bullfights when an uninterrupted local tradition can be invoked.”

The LFI MP hopes to add by amendment the ban on cockfighting still authorized in the North or certain overseas territories.

The government opposes the ban

His proposal causes shame in political groups, where freedom of vote is demanded.

In the name of defending a “cultural tradition” in the southwest and throughout the Mediterranean, the government intends to oppose it.

The Secretary of State in charge of Rurality, Dominique Faure, is announced on the ministerial bench on November 24, instead of the Keeper of the Stamps Eric Dupond-Moretti, passionate about bullfighting.

Before the Renaissance group on Tuesday morning, he called not to “fall into the radicalism of the deputy” Caron, according to a parliamentary source.

Deputies RN Renaissance divided

Because the issue divides macronistas. In July 2021, when she was not yet president of the Renaissance deputies, Aurore Bergé had signed a platform to ban bullfighting, considering it “barbaric”.

But in committee, the deputy Marie Lebec opposed the “radicality” of Aymeric Caron’s proposal. “What will be the next regional tradition that we will ban?” she warned.

On the far right, RN Timothée Houssin acknowledged the differences in his group. He accused Caron of “extremism” for his “anti-speciesist agenda” that he would push to “ban” tomorrow “foie gras”, “pony ride”, “hunting” and then “fishing”.

LFI and EELV united against bullfighting

Marine Le Pen, who makes the cause of the animal one of her markers, has spent several years proposing to ban bullfighting for minors.

Sometimes electric, the discussion has often turned for or against Aymeric Caron. On the right, LR Anne-Laure Blin reproached him for seeking the “sensational.” She defended a “popular culture”, a “regional art and identity”, highlighting the “thousands of sanctuary lands” thanks to “the breeding of fighting bulls”.

On the left, the PS is “shared”, when LFI and environmentalists support the ban.
