Paulo Raimundo: “We can’t wait for them to knock on our door”

PCP general secretary Paulo Raimundo, in an interview with Lusa, acknowledged “shortcomings” in the party’s internal organization and warned that the militants cannot wait for someone to knock on their door.

‘We can’t keep waiting for someone to knock on our door’said Paulo Raimundo in an interview with Lusa, stating that the National Conference last weekend, in Corroios, aimed to “encourage” and encourage militants to “take the initiative”.

Asked about the “weaknesses” identified in the internal organisation, Raimundo first mentioned the recruitment of new militants, highlighting that of the 2,000 who have recently joined, most are “people who say ‘we want to join'”.

“(…) we have party organizations that have everything very well in order, with dues up to date, everything in order, but with a disconnect in the middle of where they are. Or, for example, what is the value of a parish committee , whose contribution is up-to-date, Further! sold, but then it ignores the problems people experience in that parish”orphan.

“We believe that it is necessary to go further in the party organizations in the workplace, we believe that we do not obey, do what we have to do in what is a strategic matter for us, which is the connection with the workers “said.

The pandemic has also left its mark on the PCP, noting that while the party has held a congress and a Festa do Avante! in the midst of the epidemic, “weaknesses” and organizations were noted where “responsiveness was weakened.”

The party leader said there were some 49,000 militants at the last congress, in 2020, and another 2,000 have joined since then, but did not disclose how many have left or the current count.

Regarding his election as general secretary of the PCP, Paulo Raimundo admitted that he “had a different opinion” about the name that should replace Jerónimo de Sousa.

“Of course I’m not going to tell you, don’t take this the wrong way, I won’t admit it, but I had a different opinion than what has now been concluded”revealed Paulo Raimundo.

If it is true that the Communist General Secretary is, in his own words, “an unknown” to the general population, “from the point of view of the party, within the scope of the leading organs, in the connections at work, there are many years of relations and concrete experiences”.

“I admit that my comrades in these working relationships and also in human relationships looked at me with characteristics that in their opinion were worth more than fame”completed.

Speaking of his first days as Secretary General, Paulo Raimundo said he tried to follow the advice his comrades gave him:

“There’s one thing my comrades told me, ‘don’t make it up’. And I take that quite literally.”he said between laughter.
