“I still have problems achieving”: after the suicide of deputy Olivier Marleix, the National Assembly sounded

The announcement of the death of LR deputy, chosen for more than a decade at the Palais-Bourbon, immersed the assembly in the stupor on Monday, July 7. Estimated figure of the Assembly, at some point for “the hardness of the world of political life.”

A wave of sadness. The deputy Les Républicins d’Eure-Et-Loir Olivier Marleix, who had led the right group between 2022 and 2024, died Monday afternoon.

A few seconds after learning about his suicide, the vice president of the Assembly of Naïma Mouthou (Horizons), visibly moved, asked the elected officials present in the hemicycle to respect a minute of silence.

“We were all in shock when he learned the news. No one had ever noticed that he was going deeply,” said an official of the lower room with BFMTV.

Emotion in all fields

Several deputies have abandoned the assembly banks following the news, the gaze went down, such as deputy Ps Jérôme Groedj or Erwan Balalanant (Modem). Ironically, the deputies were discussing the reform of the municipal ticket in Paris, Marseille and Lyon. Olivier Marleix, with sometimes iconoclastic positions, fiercely opposed, unlike the deputies of his group.

54 years, Olivier Marleix, who leaves two girls who often liked to speak, was a pillar of the National Assembly. He was the son of Alain Marleix, former secretary of state under Nicolas Sarkozy and a very good connoisseur of the electoral card. His brother had also been one of Michel Barnier’s advisors during his visit to Matignon.

“Metal armor”

Elected elected for the Assembly since 2012, Olivier Marleix had been president of the Alstom Investigation Commission in 2019. His work had particularly noticed. After taking the Paris prosecutor’s office, ensuring that “the sale of Alstom” would have been “a corruption pact” between Emmanuel Macron and the multinational, the deputy of Eure-Et-Loir received the Ethics Prize awarded by the Anti-Colated Association.

“We are with a helmet when we do politics, we have a metal armor. And we can surprise ourselves when we discover the deep character of someone compared to its public image,” says Deputy Liot Harold Huward, a neighbor of the Olivier Marleix district.

“The hardness of the political world”

A rain of tributes took place following the announcement of its suicide, even in the highest peak of the state. Emmanuel Macron praised a “politician of experience” who “defended his ideas with conviction” in a message in the social network X.

François Bayrou, which was this Tuesday morning to the lands of Olivier Marleix, spoke of “his infinite sadness”, asking “to discern the weaknesses to be there, to get there.”

This Tuesday, the atmosphere was very heavy at the group meeting LR. “I had trouble believing it when I learned it and it is still difficult for me to achieve it,” says Deputy Julien Dive.

“He is someone who has never been anxiously tired of his pain. It is the hardness of the political world that makes the slightest weakness exploited. It is pressed to storing a lot,” explains this close to the president of the Hauts-De-France Xavier Bertrand region.

“At one time, you can eat internally and it is difficult to talk about that,” adds Julien Dive.

A funerary praise at the beginning of the school year

It is the fourth time since 1958 and the birth of the fifth republic that a deputy in office has committed suicide. The last case dates back to 2008 with the death of Jean-Marie Demange, who was killed after losing the Thionville City Council in Moselle and having killed her lover.

“Olivier Marleix was someone very esteemed, far beyond our own troops. He was very disappointed with the current political situation. But from there to commit suicide, it is really the order of unimaginable,” said Deputy Lr Josiane Corneloup.

He was paid tribute this Tuesday afternoon at the LR headquarters with a speech from the president of the party, Bruno Retailleau. A minute of silence will also take place in the hemicycle, before current problems in the government. A funeral praise will be returned soon in the hemicycle as the parliamentary tradition wishes.
