The head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and Brazil’s elected president, Lula da Silva, met for about an hour and 15 minutes this Friday at the Belém Palace in Lisbon.
Earlier, Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi also met Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Lula da Silva in a three-way meeting that was not scheduled and that took about half an hour.
No announcements were made to the media after the meetings.
Lula da Silva, who will be received today at 8 pm by the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, at the official residence of São Bento, in Lisbon, has sent statements for later.
Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho participated in the meeting between Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Lula da Silva, but left shortly before the end.
Brazil’s president-elect is visiting Portugal after attending the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has already served two terms as Brazil’s president between 2003 and 2011, was re-elected on October 30 in the second round of the Brazilian presidential election, with 50.9% of the vote. Brazilian incumbent, Jair Bolsonaro.
That evening, shortly after Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court declared the election as mathematically defined, Portugal’s head of state congratulated Lula da Silva and expressed his assurance that his mandate “will correspond to a promising period in fraternal relations” with Portugal.
According to the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, following that congratulatory message, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke by telephone early in the morning in Lisbon to the President-elect of Brazil, Lula da Silva, who both reiterated the importance of good relations between the two peoples and the two sister countries”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had already announced in September that he wanted to be present at the inauguration of Brazil’s next president, on January 1, 2023, in Brasília.
Filipe Nyusi has traveled to Portugal at the invitation of the Portuguese head of state for a visit between this Friday and Sunday, which also includes a meeting with the Prime Minister, António Costa.
