Bullfighting ban: LFI deputy Aymeric Caron withdraws his text and denounces “obstruction”

The Parisian elect announced in the chamber to withdraw his bill that sought to ban bullfighting. “I’m sorry I don’t see much courage among the deputies,” said Aymeric Caron.

A big surprise. Aymeric Caron announced in the Chamber on Thursday night the withdrawal of his bill that intended to prohibit the ban on bullfighting.

“I have to face the facts. We are not going to be able to abolish bullfighting in France today,” said the rebel deputy, denouncing the “obstruction” of his opponents.

Hundreds of amendments

Right-wing and far-right elected officials had tabled several hundred amendments to drag out debates against bullfighting. Among these, several hundred came from the RN, with sometimes surprising arguments.

The deputy Yoann Gilet thus proposed to replace the title of the bill “Abolish bullfighting: one small step for the animal, one giant leap for humanity” with “erasing bullfighting traditions”, “erasing the passion of the people of the south” or “to make impose the ideology of a man in the bullfighting towns”.

“A somewhat vain job” of the deputies

The withdrawal of Aymeric Caron, the day of the parliamentary niche of La France insoumise and after the approval of the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution was very upset.

“You show very little courage”, judged Sacha Houlié, the Renaissance president of the Legal Commission, lamenting “a somewhat vain job of the deputies”.

The bullfighting ban, however, had little chance of being approved when the Law Commission had issued an unfavorable opinion last week. La France insoumise for its part supported its lieutenant, denouncing the political atmosphere of a text that has divided strongly.

“If from now on each group, when presenting their texts, takes the opportunity to make a shower of amendments (…), it will be all our work that will be altered”, reproached the LFI deputy Alexis Corbière.

freedom of vote

The deputies were very divided on this text, beginning with the presidential majority. While she was not yet the group’s president, Aurore Bergé had signed a platform in 2021 to end this practice. But the movement has chosen to leave voting freedom to its elected officials.

Emmanuel Macron himself estimated outside the program of mayors of France this Wednesday that this text “was not the priority of the moment”.

Socialists also wanted to leave the freedom to vote to their elected officials, unlike environmentalists who were fierce supporters of their ban. Only the LR had established a common position, calling for the maintenance of the run.

Towards a new bill

“Soon bullfighting will be abolished in this country, I promise you,” Aymeric Caron nevertheless said.

He also added that he will introduce a new bill in the coming months. The debates continue this afternoon in the chamber during the LFI niche around a text on the reinsertion of unvaccinated caregivers.
