The president of the Assembly of the Republic had an incident this Thursday with an authority figure at the beginning of the plenary session, who asked him three times to open the parliamentary galleries and declared that his order should be “executed immediately”.
At the start of the fourth day of voting on the 2023 state budget proposal, Augusto Santos Silva asked, as usual, that law enforcement officers open parliamentary galleries to the public.
After a few seconds, in the presence of an agent who had failed to open the doors of one of the galleries, the Speaker of Parliament repeated the request, but the agent in question complied.
“My apologies: I have a gentleman authority officer in front of me who is not following my order. I have determined that the galleries were open to the public and that order must be executed immediately,” he said.
The relevant law enforcement officer then opened the gallery door, without any audience entering the hemicycle.
