PR: basis for calculating pensions for the future “is the problem”

According to the head of state, “there are two realities” to take into account and the first is “to know whether, yes or no, it is possible to dissect what next year’s increase would be to anticipate, given the difficult situation lived by many Portuguese, part of the payment”.

“Another thing that people worry about is to know later what the basis of the calculation is” for the future, he continued, noting that “this is the problem: if it’s only half of the total or if it’s the total pie”.

The president of the republic stressed that “this issue will still be discussed” in the parliament, which will decide on the draft law by which the government proposes “to increase pensions in 2023 from 4.43% for pensions to 886 euros, 4.07 % for pensions between 886 and 2,659 euros; and 3.53% for other pensions subject to change”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa noted that “a preparatory debate” is already underway on this topic, which will “inevitably” be discussed again at the presentation of the state budget: “That’s why we have three more moments to discuss this”.

According to Prime Minister António Costa, the pension increases in 2023 would be 7.1% and 8% if the legal formula were applied, but next year no pensioner will be affected in his income, thanks to the extraordinary allowance they will receive in October, equal to a half month pension.
